Luma Labs Releases Ray2, Its Large-Scale Video Generative Model to Paid Subscribers

Luma Labs, the creator of the popular Dream Machine generative AI platform, has launched Ray2, its new model the company boasts can produce videos using text and images in under ten seconds. The release comes weeks after it was first introduced by Chief Executive Amit Jain at Amazon Web Services’ re:Invent conference.

Although Ray2 is live within Dream Machine, it’s only available to paid subscribers. Luma Labs states that the model initially supports text-to-video creation, with image-to-video, video-to-video, and editing capabilities to come soon. API support will also be added in the future.

“Ray2 creates realistic videos with natural and coherent motion, unlocking new freedoms of creative expression and visual storytelling,” the company explains in a post on X. It claims the model is the start of a new era of video models that can produce “fast coherent motion, ultra-realistic details, and logical event sequences.” As a result, Dream Machine will create more usable generations that are “substantially more production-ready.”

In December, Jain explained that Ray2 was designed for anyone creative—consumers, prosumers, and professionals— and would generate five- to ten-second video clips featuring “advanced cinematography, smooth motion, and eye-catching drama.” What’s more, the new model is capable of distinguishing interactions between people, animals, and objects, meaning users can create more accurate characters through natural language instruction understanding and reasoning.

Although Ray2 is Luma Labs’ latest product release, it’s not the first Ray model—Dream Machine previously featured Ray1.6, which came pre-installed with the gen AI platform in June 2024. It also comes months after the company introduced its Photon text-to-image model and its subscription offering.

Ray2 will undoubtedly help Dream Machine remain competitive in the ever-growing AI video generation market. It faces competition from Runway, Pika 2.0, OpenAI’s Sora, Google’s Veo 2, Amazon’s in-development Nova Reel model, and many more.
