#FollowFriday – Movers & Shakers: The Legend Continues

This is a weekly series that I’m hoping to help add some more relevance to the #FollowFriday (what’s this?) Twitter activity that originally started through Lijit’s own Micah Baldwin to help connect Twitterers with one another. For this week’s selection, I’m looking at some more people who I believe are making serious headway into the world of the web – whether they’re doing their own thing as a startup, making some contribution to their existing jobs, or perhaps just being a great person and “influencer” in the realm.

Cathy Brooks

I heard about Cathy during my first Social Media Club event in San Francisco. She was moderating a panel where the focus was on the place of social media in the world of communications, specifically marketing & public relations. Over periods of time, I’ve come to find out more about Cathy and respect her as someone who I believe is a player in the game of social media and is an influencer. She fights for causes that she believes in and has done some incredible work. If you happen to talk to her, I’m sure you’ll be amazed at her insights. She’s a really remarkable woman. Want more proof why you should follow her? Check out this interview conducted by Derek Overbey during South by Southwest.

AllHat Tweetup - Allen's Boots - Erin Kotecki VestErin Kotecki Vest

An example of how the power of the blog is not only with men, but also women. Erin Kotecki Vest is a producer of special projects for the blogging network powerhouse BlogHer. Erin’s actions and influence have some sway amongst those that she follows and she’s not afraid to voice her opinion, but that’s why I like following her. Her unabashed approach to life and issues that she cares so passionately about makes her a great person to know. And if you’re looking to reach out to “mommybloggers” (and I hope I got that term correctly) or reach out to those of the female persuasion, then look no further. Oh, have I also mentioned that she’s actually met President Barack Obama? She has the picture to prove it! All hail the queen…the @queenofspain that is.

Tracy Lee

Who can escape the charm of Tracy Lee? She’s an entrepreneur, photographer, network extraordinaire, and founder ofLive Umbrella – a company devoted to bringing people together not only online, but offline and have them meet with other like-minded people. She has a charming personality and is always interested in seeking out new information and discovering great things. She’ll be glad to meet you if you happen to be at the same event as her and you’ll often find that she’s traveling from place to place doing business, meeting people, and having a grand ole’ time.

Francisco Dao

Lalawag has described Francisco Dao as being “funemployed” and that’s not a negative term. Believe me, if anything, it’s a compliment. Sure, while he may not have your traditional role of a job, Francisco Dao is surely making his own name for himself. While those that know him may have a different perception, I’ve come to realize that when talking about making a name or perhaps just getting noticed and having a successful campaign, you look no further than to Francisco Dao. This is the guy who recently took over producing one of Los Angeles’ biggest tech events, Twiistup and will be evolving it to the next level. Critics agree that it is a wise move and if you make it to LA for the event, say hi to Francisco. You may not know him. But you surely won’t forget him.

SF New Tech - Twitfilter - Christopher PeriChristopher Peri

The creator of what I consider to be one of the most useful Twitter applications ever created: Twittfilter. Christopher Peri has embarked on a mission to help show why people who are following you are relevant and why you shouldn’t be following others back.

Just imagine if you’ve ever received notifications that says John Doe is following you. You’d like to know whether they’re worth you following back. Sure you could look at their tweets & profile, but maybe you want to know the friends they have in common with you. Twittfilter will accomplish that for you. Christopher has created his own algorithm to help sanitize your follower list so you have some real value in your Twitter stream. I’ve blogged about Twittfilter before and you can check it out here, but in the meantime, take a look at what Christopher has going for him and make a new friend.

Karen Hartline

An outstanding karaoke singer is not why I’m recommending her to you to follow on Twitter. Rather, I’m thinking that she’s one of the hardest working friends that I know. She’s been going at it non-stop and I admire her dedication. From working on events for Mashable to helping out PR legend Brian Solis, Karen is always at the top of her game and you’ll always find some value from her tweets. w00t!

TechKaraoke SF - Gregarious Narain & Claire ChangClaire Chang

Claire is a great friend that I met at South by Southwest and every tech event I go to, she’s usually there. An outstanding networker and a great marketer to boot, Claire has the drive and determination to succeed in anything that she does. She’s working with a team to produce a new startup that unfortunately I haven’t heard much about as she’s still in “stealth mode”, but what I do know is the name: LazyFeed. It hopes to be a great product and as many of our common friends will atest, with Claire at the wheel, it’ll do just fine.
