#FollowFriday: Making It More Relevant

Adobe Firefly-created image of Friday and social connections.

This is a weekly series that I’m hoping to help add some more relevance to the #FollowFriday (what’s this?) Twitter activity that originally started through Lijit’s own Micah Baldwin to help connect Twitterers.

I’ve been asked on occasion about folks to follow and why these people are relevant. So this is my attempt at showing the meaning behind my selections. I’ll share several people that I follow here along with a brief description of why you should care and follow them.

Clara Shih, Tara Hunt & Adam Jackson

Why am I recommending three people all at once? They’re authors and have incredible insight into their industry & profession.

Clara Shih is the author of “The Facebook Era” and was the first person to create a Facebook application that tied back in with the Salesforce.com CRM system. She’s highly in tune with what’s been emerging with Facebook and anyone who wants to talk more about integration strategy and how to take advantage of Facebook should ping her with a tweet.

We all know about relationships, but Tara Hunt takes it to a whole new level. You may have heard about something called the “Whuffie Factor”, but once you hear Tara talk about it, you’ll understand how social capital is an extremely powerful thing in the world of social media.

If you use Twitter, then meet Adam Jackson. He’s working on writing a new book on 140 characters. He’s been around social media for quite some time and has met many of the movers and shakers in Silicon Valley. Do you want to know about how to use social media and what to do on Twitter? Talk to Adam.

Gregarious Narain

If you aren’t already following @gregarious then you’re missing out. I first met him face-to-face at this past South by Southwest and have spoken to him about what he does and what he’s doing.

Did you know that he’s an entrepreneur? He has his product soon to be released called Lil’ Grams and having seen the demo and heard the pitch, it’s looking like it’ll knock the socks off of the parental market.

But let’s not forget that Gregarious is one helluva networker and is one of the most knowledgeable individuals in the tech industry. If you want strategy work for your web marketing, then you contact him.

Andrew Hyde

Have you heard about Startup Weekend? Andrew Hyde is one of the founders and is a member of TechStars. He’s a smart, savvy individual who has a good understanding of what it takes to have a great startup. Okay, so he’s a big show-off with his fancy camera, but for that, I’ll forgive him.

Nathan Kam

In Hawaii, there’s a growing number of people involved in the tech, web, and social media scene. Nathan Kam is one of those individuals. He’s a PR guy, but here’s the twist: he covers the tourism industry and uses social media to make his programs a success. Imagine that! An agency guy using social media! If you want to know about where tourism is going and how social media is affecting it (and want to get the latest information on Hawaii), then say “ALOHA!” to Nathan.

Geoff Livingston

Oh no…not another PR guy, right? I’ve already recommended one, so what can I possibly say about Geoff Livingston? He understands the evolution of PR and social media.

Have you ever heard the phrase “social media for social causes”? Well, that’s Geoff. He’s all about helping out the world and making our lives easier and better. And I should mention that he’s a successful author with one of the best books out there for businesses to read — Now Is Gone — as it’ll help you get set up on how to use social media effectively.

Oh, and he also rides a motorcycle so isn’t that a good enough reason to follow him? Right on, Social Media Rabbi!

You could remove me from that list and I'd wholeheartedly agree that you've compiled an excellent list for FollowFriday. So feel free to take me off if you want 🙂

Good job Ken and it's been great chatting with you lately. I hope our friendship continues to grow and I can repay you for all of the photos you've taken of me at parties 🙂

Thanks for the wonderful compliment and feedback. Really annoyed that now I have to add more detail to my #followfridays and can't just copy yours anymore 🙂

    Good Job Ken.

Ken, thanks for the FollowFriday shout out. I think you've done a great thing here of personalizing this Twitter effort and turning it into something more meaningful. I'm thinking about doing the same going forward. Have a great Aloha Friday and an even better weekend.
